In 2003, the New Yorker published an article called 'Jumpers'. The article chronicled the deeply saddening amount of people who take their own lives by jumping from the ironically beautiful Golden Gate Bridge. After the suicide of one man, the FBI and local police were working together in an effort to understand the man's actions. They found a note...
"I’m going to walk to the bridge. If one person smiles at me on the way, I will not jump"
So today, wherever you are, whoever you are, whatever you do, just give someone a smile. Someone you don't even know. You don't know how precious this small act can be; how much it can mean to someone. However, for me this doesn't simply carry the message of the importance of giving a smile, rather it's a reminder that we've all forgotton what it is to be truly altruistic.
